Hand-Spun Mawata Silk Tsumugi Textile Using Traditional Ojiya-Chijimi Techniques (Intangible Cultural Heritage)

This textile bolt is woven using the traditional techniques of Ojiya-chijimi—recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage—while employing hand-spun silk yarn made from mawata (silk floss). The natural irregularities of these hand-spun threads create a richly textured surface and a soft, luminous quality that cannot be replicated by modern industrial production.

Today, pure domestically produced Japanese silk accounts for less than 1% of the total silk used in Japan, and textiles made from hand-spun mawata silk yarns are exceptionally rare.

While Ojiya-chijimi is traditionally woven from ramie, this work applies the same traditional techniques to silk tsumugi, resulting in a softer and more fluid texture.

This preserves the tradition of Japanese crafts.

While the fabric is narrow in width, it lends itself beautifully to interior decoration, and with creative straight-cutting and tailoring techniques, it can also be made into a long dress.

Ce coupon est tissé selon les techniques traditionnelles de l’Ojiya-chijimi, reconnu comme patrimoine culturel immatériel, en utilisant des fils de soie filés à la main à partir de mawata (soie ouate). Les irrégularités naturelles du fil confèrent à la surface une texture riche et une douceur lumineuse, impossibles à reproduire par des procédés industriels modernes.

Aujourd’hui, la soie purement produite au Japon représente moins de 1 % de la soie utilisée dans le pays, et les textiles réalisés à partir de fils de soie mawata filés à la main sont extrêmement rares.

Il s'agit d'un tissu issu de l'artisanat traditionnel japonais.

Si l’Ojiya-chijimi est traditionnellement réalisé en ramie, cette œuvre applique ces techniques à la soie tsumugi, offrant une texture plus souple et fluide.

Malgré sa largeur étroite, ce textile se prête élégamment à la décoration intérieure et, grâce à des techniques de coupe droite et de confection ingénieuses, peut également devenir une robe longue.

本作は、無形文化財「小千谷ちぢみ」に伝わる伝統技術をそのままに、真綿を手紡ぎした糸を用いて織られた反物です。糸の節が生み出す自然な凹凸と、やわらかな光を含む絹の質感は、機械生産では決して再現できない手仕事ならではの表情を宿しています。

現在、国内で生産される純国産絹は全体の1％にも満たず、さらに真綿から手紡ぎされた糸による織物は極めて希少となっています。

本来、無形文化財の小千谷ちぢみは麻を用いた織物として知られていますが、これは小千谷ちぢみの伝統技術をそのまま真綿を手つむぎして織りあげていて、しなやかで穏やかな風合いが出ています。
