All-Over Shibori Drawstring Bag  1970s

This all-over shibori drawstring bag was made in Japan in the 1970s.

At that time, before the widespread mechanization of the craft, each individual section of the shibori pattern was created by hand. The process required an exceptional amount of time and patience, as well as great skill and concentration to achieve such fine and even work.

The delicate shibori covering the entire fabric creates a soft, three-dimensional texture. Light and shadow play across its surface, subtly changing its appearance depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

Drawstring bags have long been used in Japan and were also carried as accessories with kimono. This rare vintage piece from the 1970s preserves the beauty of traditional shibori and the remarkable hand craftsmanship of an era before increasing mechanization.

The base of the bag features a finely handwoven bamboo basket, crafted from high-quality bamboo available at the time. Its delicate weaving further reflects the careful hand craftsmanship and skill of Japanese artisans of the period.
