A refined Nishijin silk obi with courtly elegance

Woven in Kyoto during the mid-1970s, this Nishijin silk obi embodies a refined sense of harmony through its repeating roundel design.

The pattern features elegant circular medallions (marumon), each enclosing stylized paulownia motifs—an emblem historically associated with imperial and aristocratic culture in Japan. The rhythmic repetition of these forms creates a composition that is both orderly and visually rich.

The textile is executed using highly sophisticated multi-weft brocade techniques, where finely controlled silk threads and subtle color variations produce a gently raised surface and a luminous depth.

Such precision and complexity reflect the highest level of Nishijin craftsmanship of the period, much of which is no longer reproducible today.

Un obi raffiné d’une grande distinction

Un obi en soie Nishijin des années 1970, tissé à Kyoto selon une technique de brocart à trames multiples d’une grande sophistication.

Le décor se compose de médaillons (marumon) renfermant des motifs stylisés de paulownia, symbole historiquement lié à la cour impériale et à l’aristocratie japonaise. La répétition rythmique de ces motifs crée une composition harmonieuse et d’une grande élégance.

Le tissage révèle une précision exceptionnelle : fils de soie fins, trames colorées multiples et légers accents métalliques produisent un relief subtil et une profondeur lumineuse. Ce niveau de savoir-faire illustre l’excellence des textiles Nishijin, aujourd’hui difficilement reproductible.

格調高い西陣織の逸品

1970年代中頃に京都・西陣で織られた、非常に高度な技術による絹織の帯です。

文様は、円形の中に桐を配した「丸文」を繰り返した構成で、桐は古来より皇室や高貴な家にゆかりのある格調高い意匠です。整然と並ぶ丸文が、典雅で調和のとれた美しさを生み出しています。

細い絹糸に多色の緯糸を用いた精緻な紋織により、わずかに浮き上がるような立体感と柔らかな光沢が生まれています。このような高度な織技術は、当時の西陣織の頂点を示すものであり、現代では再現が難しい貴重な作品です。
