What is Sukui-ori (Sukui woven obi)?

Sukui-ori is a traditional Japanese weaving technique in which weft threads are selectively inserted to create motifs.

Rather than forming a rigid structure, the design areas are woven freely, allowing for painterly and expressive compositions.

Unlike heavy tapestry techniques such as tsuzure-ori, sukui weaving produces a lighter, more supple textile.

It is particularly valued for its subtle gradations, flowing lines, and refined use of negative space.

When worn, a sukui obi drapes softly and conveys understated elegance.
